In 2010, after consultation with pupils and teachers and a period of fundraising by the school, the garden was designed and plans drawn up by Julie Macrae, local architect and parent member of the garden working group. The site was located at the back, or North East, of the school near the Midmills Road entrance. It has proved to be an ideal site for raising plants, mainly south facing and surrounded on three sides by a high sandstone wall, in existence from the Victorian era when the main building of the school was constructed. This promotes a natural walled garden environment in what can otherwise be a blustery school grounds.
Prior to the construction of the garden the area was entirely hard landscaped in tarmac. We lifted limited areas of tarmac to allow the formation of raised beds, the planting of permanent hedging and we established a circular lawn that can be used as an outdoor classroom and story-telling area. Enclosed within the curved hedging is a musical and sensory garden plus a dragonfly seat with surrounding soft surfacing.
